On Oct. 20, 2016, credit unions around the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day®, an annual event to commemorate the credit union movement’s impact and achievements. In honor of this special day, Oregon Community Credit Union invites our members and the entire community to visit our branches for free coffee and cookies.
I’d like to take a moment to talk about why credit unions are different. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide an effective and viable alternative to for-profit financial institutions for more than 217 million members in 105 countries. Worldwide, 57,000 credit unions exist to serve their member-owners, providing a safe place to save money and access affordable loans. But OCCU does more than provide a wide range of vital financial services. It’s different here SM because we care about our members and the communities we serve. OCCU demonstrates that caring by contributing time and money to organizations and causes that improve our communities, educate our children and provide for our neighbors’ basic needs. In 2015, we donated more than $372,781 to local organizations to better our communities and our employees spent 1,775 hours volunteering at various nonprofit organizations throughout Oregon.
At OCCU, we are investing in the credit union mantra “people helping people.” OCCU helps more than 132,000 members reach their financial goals every day by providing exceptional member service. Unlike for-profit financial institutions, we emphasize people over profits, delivering value for our members by placing their needs at the center of every decision we make. That’s the credit union difference.
Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. Each year, the international event affords the opportunity to remember credit unions’ proud history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union difference. This year’s theme, “The Authentic Difference,” celebrates what makes credit unions truly unique. So we invite you to come celebrate with us. Stop by one of our branches for a treat, and share how being a member of a credit union has made a difference in your life.
